Artist Alban. American Pop Art and the New French Realism…

P1040733

Meet Alban, an artist inspired by Rauschenberg he combines American Pop Art and industrial structures. In recent years, Alban explored several themes: “The Cabins” reported to the warplanes, “Steelworkers” from his fascination with industrial machines and “Materials” is an aesthetic research on textures and colours.

Alban paints full time and explores the voyeuristic side of his nature that he first discovered as a child observing the industrial world around him. Alban’s use of materials and pop art tradition caught my attention. The clever rendering of the distressed surface, the references to both pop art, politics and history draw the eye and captures the imagination.

Below, please find the Gallery preview to his collection. For further information contact us – george@georgethorntonart.com

Orange is the New Black… (Art-wise obviously…)

Crwcwd.jpg

‘Crwcwd’ by Anna E Davies

The orange colour is a very warm and vibrant that actually gives very different reactions throughout the world. In the Netherlands it’s the national colour. Asia, more sacred surrounding Buddhist monks and their robes and finally, the United States its associated with Halloween! That aside the colour orange always plays a big part in our homes. Very warm. From carrot colored carpets to apricot bathroom suites, orange has managed to makes us smile and certainly brightens up that room or office space. See our art, be inspired and find what works for you?

Sara Pope – So Hot Right Now

Mathematician turned graphic designer, turned shoe designer, turned artist Sara Pope brings the vibrant, lively attitude of fashion to her ‘lippy’ paintings.

She combines the skill and craftmanship she learned from her time in fashion (working with Paul Smith, Lacoste and Jasmine Di Milo) with an eye for the glamour and sexual power conveyed by a pair of lips.

Her paintings of vivid, glossy lips in bold colours explore the landscape of pop culture, recalling John Pache’s famous Rolling Stones logo as much as Samuel Beckett’s mouthy monologue Not I.

Her paintings begin with a photo shoot where she paints a model’s lips and then tries to capture images conveying emotions like love and flirtation for inspiration. The painting process then involves several layers of thin oil-diluted paint being overlaid, blending and smoothing the colours extensively at every stage. Emulating the slickness of advertising, the result is glossy and irresistible.

Antony Gormley’s “Standing Matter” (2010)

Standing Matter 2010

Antony Gormley’s ‘Standing Matter’ (2010) is a piece of human appreciation of the weight of mans’ imperfection faced with those perfect symmetrical blocks of his own creation. A human without angles and anonymous against colourless outlines speaks to the hopelessness of the human condition – relentless progress of the Lego block constructions of our weak and featureless imaginations against the molecular structure less shape of our existence. Exquisite.

‘Standing Matter’ is on display in the Gallery and available to purchase. Framed and certified with Gormley’s signature on the reverse.

Herringkell MK1

We’d like to introduce you to our new artist, bronze practitioner, Adam Warwick Hall.

We’re really excited to have these pieces in the gallery! Exceptionally crafted with integrity and fine challenging details. There is so much depth to these works – they contemplate not only artifice, but also the natural versus the man-made.

Adam has an incredible understanding of the mechanics of birds and fish. With this knowledge he crafts a unique style, a mix of Aerodynamic, animal and plant.

Below, a modest preview of these gorgeous pieces.

Ground Effect

Fascinated by aircraft, animals and plants from an early age, Adam trained as a sculptor from 1989 to 1991. On graduating he immediately started work as a sculptor and model maker for the Film and TV industry at Shepperton and Pinewood Studios. He then progressed to specialist work with exhibition and aerospace companies creating one-off pieces, which other trades were not able to make due to their complex curves and diverse materials. In 2010, after 20 years of making all types of shapes and forms in a range of materials for a wide variety of people and companies, Adam set up his own studio near Bristol. Inspired by aerodynamic, organic and animal forms his work as an artist has always been a mixture of biology and mechanisation. Adam’s love of aerodynamic forms fuels his concepts; fusing mechanised structures with organic forms to create his pieces

The Gallery is showcasing furthers works in our studio. Come and see these fabulous pieces in the flesh!
